The Day They Logged Elfland
Seven Pictures
Elfland was the famous magic forest up above the city on a hill, the UC Santa Cruz campus. People would go up there and construct shrines for others to find later during psychedelic journeys; stuff like that. To many it was a special little sacred world. Technically, the center of Elfland still exists, but it is now right near the back walls of the newly constructed College Nine, which makes it a very different place. Most of the area was clear cut to make way for the construction project in the summer of 1991. I heard about a protest of the logging one weekend and went to it with my camera. It was pretty weird. No-one was allowed where the action was, so police, journalists and protesters mostly hung around looking for things to do; an unikely group. Some people dodged and snuck by the police to get close enough to the loggers to harrass them, occassionally getting caught. The cameraman seen pictured with the lady cop also played at that, until his camera was knocked to the ground by an officer patrolling the perimeter. The woman who appears to be hurt in the fifth and sixth pictures had "died" in sympathy with a tree during the logging. That is also her in the third picture.
